{ playa del carmen }

LAS PALAPAS

From powder soft beaches to trendy bars, gourmet restaurants and ancient Mayan temples, the options for entertainment and culture are limitless in and around hip Playa del Carmen in Mexico’s iconic Riviera Maya. And for those who seek an authentic hotel experience right on one of the town’s most beautiful beaches, there’s Las Palapas, which fuses toes-in-the-sand atmosphere with charming and attentive service and environmental responsibility.

There’s something for everyone in Mexico’s stunning Riviera Maya and particularly in the trendy town of Playa del Carmen—from hip and minimalist boutique hotels to enormous all-inclusive resorts and tiny B&B’s for honeymooners. With its laid-back style, tasty Mayan-inspired meals and eco-friendly edge, Las Palapas attracts an altogether different crowd: those who seek an authentic Mexican retreat with the option of living it up in town. This is the kind of place where you can kick off your shoes (yeah, your flip flops too) and wander around the property barefoot; the kind of place where you can truly disconnect from the wired world (there are no TVs, iPod docking stations or phones in the rooms); a place where you can enjoy delicious Mayan dishes passed down from generations as well as tropical concoctions prepared by an intuitive bartender (he seemed to know just by looking at me the kind of drink I liked: sweet and citrusy).

At Las Palapas, pretty walking paths bordered by the greenest grass you’ll ever see lead to thatched-roof bungalows that look out to the cerulean sea, the circular pool or the garden. The decor is simple but comfortable: think tiled floors, stone walls, Hawaiian-inspired rattan chairs and writing desks, mosquito nets hanging above sleep-inducing beds and colorful window treatments that keep out the bright sun in the morning. Hammocks hang in each of the bungalow’s private terrace or veranda and, should you tire of the view outside your door, there are plenty more hanging just so from palm trees spread throughout the ample property.

Ahh, the property. Unlike some hotels in Playa, Las Palapas’ designers took great care to leave some of the land the hotel sits on entirely untouched so that guests can get a sense of what this area looked like, perhaps a hundred years ago. During a muggy afternoon exploring the hotel’s “Ecological Section,” I was lucky enough to stumble upon a tucan so large and beautiful that for a moment I thought he wasn’t real. A stay at Las Palapas can be so soothing, so relaxing that upon checking out you almost feel like it was all just a dream. A very sweet dream, indeed.

What to Love:
1. Great location right on the beach,
2. Free WiFi internet access in rooms
3. Preserved “Ecological Section”perfect for sighting local flora and fauna
4. Steps from Quinta Avenida’s happening nightlife
5. Board games, billiards and ping-pong are a treat for families

Need to Know:
1. Design is rustic and laid back—don’t expect turn down service
2. Mini fridges available upon request
3. Live (and lively) music at dinnertime might not suite everyone
4. Hotel restaurant specializes in Mexican food
5. Kids under six years old stay free

While You're There:
1. Sand Between Your Toes: Grab a seat at the beach bar and let the bartender fix you one of his favorite cocktails
2. Take a Dip: Let the hotel arrange a tour of nearby cenotes, natural water holes that were considered sacred by the Mayans
3. See and Be Seen: Take a stroll down Fifth Avenue to shop, eat and drink among all the pretty people.
4. Exfoliate: Book a Marine Body Scrub to scrub away dead cells and stimulate blood circulation.
5. Take a picture: Climb the hotel’s observation tower to get a stunning bird’s eye view of the area. Don’t forget your camera.

THE RECIPE
Mucho Matcha

This matcha mango smoothie has a tropical flavor with green tea essence and a hit of ginger. It is as delicious as it is cleansing. The high chlorophyll and mineral content of the matcha make it a strong blood detoxifier and alkalinizer, as well as an effective blood sugar stabilizer. The addition of ginger makes this shake even more detoxi- fying, because ginger has been used for years as a cleansing agent to the bowels, kidneys, and skin. So get your green on and make this detoxifying elixir a part of your life.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup/225 g low-fat mango-apricot yogurt
1/2 cup/120 ml vanilla soy milk
1 1/4 cups/215 g chopped frozen mango
3/4 cup/180 ml passion-fruit juice, made into ice cubes
1 tsp matcha powder, plus more to taste
3/4 tsp peeled and chopped fresh ginger

Combine the yogurt and soy milk in a blender. Add the mango, passion-fruit ice cubes, 1 tsp matcha powder, and the ginger. Blend until smooth. Add more matcha powder, if you like.

Makes about 2 1/2 Cups/600 Ml; serves 2

factoid: green tea is well known for its health properties, but matcha contains up to 137 times more antioxidants. pound for pound, it has the highest level of antioxidants (measured in orac units) of any food on earth.

{ X5 }

2011 BMW X5

Knowing that rarely do SUV buyers venture off-road, BMW entered the luxury SUV segment a decade ago with a nible car built for on-road performance and handling. BMW also took out the "utility" out of "sport utility vehicle" and instead coined the term "sport activity vehicle." With the 2011 model year, BMW brings an X5 that features a new turbocharged inline-six and V-8 gasoline engines paired with eight-speed automatic transmission as well as fresh styling. And, of course, an optional thrid row seat to fit your entire brood as well as more cargo capacity.

Interior Yes, its on-road performance is something to behold. But even parked the X5 continues to impress. With built-in features like an iPod interface, privacy glass, and package options for cold weather, technology and more, the X5 Premium will be the first SAV that personally caters to you. All 7 of you.

Safety Nasty weather. Terrible road conditions. A deer crossing. When a driver loses control, there's usually more than one factor involved. Using built-in sensors to continually monitor multiple variables - such as speed, steering angle, yaw, brake pressure and traction - BMW's Dynamic Stability Control system can detect and help correct the loss of wheel traction immediately. All of which helps to keep you in control, no matter what the circumstances. BMW Assist intelligently integrates the driver, the vehicle and the environment as part of BMW's global ConnectedDrive initiative. Combining GPS location technology with hands-free wireless communication, BMW Assist connects you to a response specialist for help with almost everything, from an emergency situation to directions and traffic information. The BMW Assist Safety Plan is part of Ultimate Service, included at no cost for 4 years from your BMW's in-service date.

VERDICT: Rainstorms? Tight turns? Rough terrain? The X5 Sports Activity Vehicle is ready for any journey. And with seating for seven, it's as versatile inside as it is outside.
